Sarasota, home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, is also one of those places that comes with its share of quirks.
Take the weather for example, it can be 92 degrees out and pouring but still considered “nice out.” Give it five minutes and it will seem like it was never even raining. You could leave the house sweating, bring a hoodie “just in case,” get caught in a sudden downpour at lunch, and somehow still end the day sunburned. This erratic weather is part of the charm.
Next up in the starter pack is unlimited exposure to construction. There’s always something being built, but no one knows what.
That leads into the next aspect, driving. You haven’t truly lived until you’ve been stuck behind someone going 25 in a 45 with their turn signal on for three straight miles. The turn never comes. Then there are others acting like the rules are more of suggestions.
Then the beaches, Sarasota beaches are beautiful, yes, but they’re also full of contradictions. People will wake up at 5 a.m. to get a good parking spot, then complain loudly about how early they had to wake up. Someone is always feeding the seagulls despite very clear signs saying not to. That same person then acts shocked when a swarm of seagulls is stealing their lunch.
Finally, the fashion, here, anything goes. You’ll see someone in a full winter jacket when it’s 80 degrees because it gets cold in the AC, standing next to someone wearing flip-flops and a swimsuit in December saying, “It’s basically summer.” Both think the other one is insane.
That’s Sarasota in a nutshell, a place where weather, driving, beaches, and fashion seem to follow their own sets of rules. All of these quirks just help make the city unforgettable. Only in Sarasota.
