Medical dramas have become known for their fast-paced scenes and intense plots. The question is, why have they become so popular? What draws the audience in?
Medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy, ER, The Pitt, or The Good Doctor use medical situations and drama to interest viewers. The high-risk procedures and surgeries keep the audience on the edge of their seat.
They are frequently watched by people in the medical field or by those aspiring to be. Two Pine View students, senior Isabel Jerome and junior Maya Nowakowski, are interested in the medical field and are fans of several medical dramas.
Nowakowski began to watch Grey’s Anatomy in her sophomore year because she was interested in the medical field and looking for a new show to watch. Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama that aired on ABC in March of 2005 and is still airing new seasons. Nowakowski enjoys seeing how TV portrays the hospital setting.
Jerome started to watch The Resident around 3 years ago. The Resident is an American medical drama that aired on Fox from January 21, 2018, to January 17, 2023.
“I want to go into the medical field, so I’m like ‘What better way to learn about how to handle things than to watch it?'” Jerome said.
Though popular, the accuracy of the shows is questioned. According to myprefferred.com, in an article published January 14 2026, discussing the most accurate medical dramas, “ER” is the most accurate because “The show benefited from extensive use of medical consultants and a commitment to portraying the emergency room as chaotic, imperfect, and emotionally exhausting.”
However, not all shows are famous for their realism and instead focus on the emotional and theatrical aspects. Grey’s Anatomy is currently 22 seasons long and has been running for 21 years. The reason the show can run for so long without losing much popularity is that it frequently adds new interns to the hospital. Many different medical situations can also be portrayed without boring the audience.
The show is often criticized for its inaccuracy due to the doctors being too involved and not as much is shown of nurses and the work they do. This is likely because the show’s purpose is to entertain, but nevertheless, it is an annoyance for many medical professionals watching the show.
To prevent some of these inaccuracies, many medical shows hire medical advisers to consult the writers. This helps to ensure that the plot is medically correct.
Besides the shows being set in hospitals, they also portray many different personal issues in the doctors’ and nurses’ lives that the audience can relate to. This keeps the audience feeling connected to the medical professionals.
Many medical dramas can seem similar to audiences for several reasons. The dramatic romances and chaotic lives the doctors are a common sight. Each new episode typically introduces a new character, which can make it feel like all the shows are structured the same. While it may be considered a repetitive structure, this can allow for new conditions to be explored in the show. There are also ways the shows can keep you engaged.
“One thing about Grey’s Anatomy specifically is that they’re not shy about death and they will kill off some of your favorite characters for the authenticity of the plot,” Nowakowski said.
Part of the reason these shows can get so popular is because of the promotion on social media. Social media apps like TikTok have accounts that post short clips or scenes of an episode that are audience-appealing.
“I know for me, it kind of made me look up the show because it looks so interesting,” Jerome said.
Nowakowski made a similar statement, agreeing that social media plays a significant role in what viewers choose to watch.
“It kind of gives you a little insight into what’s happening, what’s popular,” Nowakowski said.
With the mix of stress, emotion, and humanity, medical dramas are able to entertain and connect people across the world.
